Kevin Barhydt is the author of, “Dear Stephen Michael’s Mother: A Memoir.”

The book is a memoir of how a young boy who was abandoned, abused, and addicted; transformed into a man with the hope, courage, and resilience to seek his biological mother.

At 45 and after many years of recovery, Kevin began a painful journey to uncover his origins and search for his mother. A quote Kevin often uses is,

“When the bird falls out of the tree, the bird is traumatized.

So is the mother.”

Kevin now leads a happy and fulfilling life. He does interviews to help fight stigmas that plague survivors of various hardships and conditions.

(Synopsis) A congregation is packed into a church and witnesses a would-be assassin shoot Nicholas Rossi, a young man believed to be responsible for numerous miracles. After the shot rang out, Father Thomas O’Toole stood on the altar with a .38 Special still smoking and his intended victim, Nicholas Rossi, was gone. Ari Meyer, Esquire, a 15-year veteran of the Public Defender’s Office, is assigned to represent Father O’Toole at trial for attempted homicide.

Heartly Law?

The case becomes oddly personal to Meyer and puts his personal life into a downward spiral down along with his law practice.

“Heartly Law?,” the sequel to “Heartly God?,” follows Ari Meyer as he attempts to convince a jury that a single isolated event should not outweigh an entire life dedicated to service and kindness for others.

Daniela’s book gives you a view of therapy sessions from her side of the couch along with transcripts of what’s going through her mind as she’s working. Along with stories from her growing up and training years, the majority of the book spans 25 years of rural psychiatric practice. Written with candor and a light touch, these clinical and personal tales reveal a way of thinking that is essential for living actively, fully, and doing good work with a sense of wonder.

The interview is lighthearted, informative, and entertaining. Even if mental health fields are not of a particular interest to you, her career journey and life experiences are worth a listen. Much of the same can be said about the book. If you are in the field of mental health I’m sure you will find the material that much more stimulating but even as a novice or just someone who is just curious about human behavior, the book might very well be worth your time.

Barbara has a diversified background. She has experience regarding retail management, modeling, and owning a talent agency. She has also authored books before including “While You Were Sleeping”which dealt with cancer and the children’s book “Duffy Chronicles.”

As the subtitle of the book indicates, the subject matter of “daddy DU JOUR” is also varied. It chronicles the impact of various home dynamics in relation to the childhood and life of Barbara. Her story is a journey of overcoming life’s obstacles and ultimately reaching a sense of peace having traveled so far. Also comes the greater good of learning from life’s hardships and being better equipped to manage those circumstances for better life decisions while finding one’s own path in life.

I was very happy to have another opportunity to interview Brian Kiley for HumorOutcasts. My last podcast with him was about a year ago for his book, “The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins.” His new book is titled, “Maybe Kevin” and is available now on Amazon.

maybe-kevin-coverBrian has an extensive resume including being an Emmy Award winning writer for the Conan O’Brien Show. During this episode we talked a little bit about his work with Conan as well as some of his tricks of the trade regarding his writing process.

As we also discussed during this interview “Maybe Kevin” is somewhat of a hard book to categorize into a neat little genre. The book simultaneously manages several story-lines and time periods. Brian and I share a fondness for the WWII era and we talk about several reasons as to why that is as our discussion about the book moves along.

In general, most good stories are ones of relationships and “Maybe Kevin” is no exception. To learn more about the writing of this book I would give our podcast a listen and hear it from Brian Kiley himself.
